the clovers :

Groupe vocal (doo wop)  formé en 1946 à AMSTROND HIGH SCHOOL (WASHINGTON D.C) . Il est composé de HAROLD LUCAS - BILLY SHELTON et THOMAS WOODS , peu apres JOHN BUDDY BAILEY les rejoint pour en etre un peu LE LEADER . Ils deviennet alors les FOUR CLOVERS (trefle porte bonheur) .. Pour améliorer le band , ils sont poussés de changer en ecartant , SHELTON et WOODS et engager , MATHIEU Mc CARTER et HAROLD WINLEY , nous sommes en 1948 . Le vrai démarrage se fait en 1950 , lorsque LOU KREFETZ devient leur manager . Ils signent à RAINBOW RECORDS et enregistrent leur 1er single :

(SP RAINBOW 11-122) YES SIR THAT S MY BABY / WHEN YOU COME BACK TO ME  ,  sans trop  de réussite . KREFETZ les fait signer pour ATLANTIC en 1951  et leur adjoint un guitariste , BILL HARRIS  . En fevrier , ils apparaissent au APPOLLO THEATER  . Leur premier single à ATLANTIC va etre UN GROS HIT , N1 au NATIONAL CHARTS en juin 1951 :

DON T YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU / SKYLARK (SP ATLANTIC 934 ) .

 Le 2e simple subit un peu le meme parcours , N1 en SEPTEMBRE , incroyable pour un groupe vocal ROCK & blues :

NEEDLESS / FOOL FOOL FOOL  (SP ATLANTIC 944) , surtout grace à FOOL FOOL FOOL (repris plus tard par ELVIS) . En 1952 BAILEY est remplacé par JOHN PHILLIPS , qui reste quelques mois , mais est tres vite "remercié" et à son tour remplacé par , CHARLIE WHITE des DOMINOES AND THE CHECKERS . WHITE quitte le groupe en 1953  pour des raisons personnelles et BILLY MITCHELL prend sa place . Le succés s'amoindri  , mais BUDDLY BAILEY de retour de l'armée rejoint le band , pour former un quintet . Ils vont sortir une dizaine de disques , avant de connaitre à nouveau le "top" avec :

DEVIL OR ANGEL / HEY DOLL BABY (sp atlantic 1083)

 MITCHELL les quitte en 1957 , pour essayer une carriere solo ,  mais les rejoint peu apres . KREFETZ transfere le groupe sur son LABEL crée depuis quelques temps : POPLARCRECORDS . 2 singles vont sortir alors toutefois sans gloire . POPLAR est racheté par UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS ; une aubaine , ils vont travailler avec le DUO MYTHIQUE : LEIBER AND STOLLER (cf ELVIS) , qui vont leur écrire leur PLUS GROS TUBE : LOVE POTION N 9 ...'(SP UNITED ARTIST 180) LOVE POTION N 9 / STAY AWHILE sort en juillet 1959  ET  EST LE 2E simple sous ce label pour the CLOVERS . Par nécessité , ils enregistrent 2 version du HIT . En 1961 le contrat expire avec le dernier 45 t (SP UNITED ARTISTS 2129) THE BOITIE GREEN / DRIVE IT HOME et de suite signent pour WINLEY RECORDS . Le band décide de ce séparer et 2 clans distincts vont se former .  Notamment LUCAS ET MITCHELL , avec 2 nouveaux membres : JAMES  TOY WALTON - ROBERT RUSSELL ; MAIS MITCHELL s'en va en 1962 et est remplacé par ROOSVELT TIPPIE HUBBARD .  Ils sortent 2 singles sous le nom :  TIPPIE AND THE CLOVERS à TIGER RECORDS  , dont un titre de LEIBER AND STOLLER  (la encore)  : BOSSA NOVA BABY (repris par ELVIS) . THE CLOVERS est reformé fin 1963 avec LUCAS - BAILEY et WINLEY ...La suite est confuse , il va y avoir reformation sur reformation , enregistrement et réenregistrement de leurs anciens tubes ETC ETC .....; sans vraiment retrouver la gloire . RUSSELL décède en 1969  , TOY WALTON en 1976 et TIPPIE HUBBARD en 1980 ....

En 1988 il y a une réunion du groupes (des membres restants) , pour un LIVE A AUSTIN (TEXAS) . Ils vont tourner dans les années 90 , changeant de membres également 2000 , pour finir en 2002  au VGHOF induction ceremony , ce sera peu apres la fin des CLOVERS .

En 2006 , enfin RAYMOND GREEN reforme THE CLOVER avec entres autres , le seul survivant des membres fondateurs : HAROLD WINLEY .

Ils sont introduit en 2001 au DOO WOP HALL OF FAME -

EN 2002 au VOCAL GROUP HALL OF FAME .

et aussi en 2002 au UNITED IN GROUP HARMONY HALL OF FAME .
