• news Fit for the king: Elvis Presley’s fashion legacy – in pictures

Before he was a symbol for American excess – all slick quiff and skintight jumpsuits in Vegas – Elvis Presley could be found in more laid-back, rockabilly attire. Among the singer’s early go-tos were Cuban collars and penny loafers, Americana staples that have endured and evolved via New England prep (such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren) and Riviera charm (think Call Me By Your Name).

“We like to take credit for putting Elvis in the black-and-pink colour combination. Back then, ‘real men’ wouldn’t wear pastel pink.” So said Hal Lansky, whose family’s clothing store Presley frequented in Memphis, Tennessee, from his teens onwards. The trend-bending bubble-gum suit that the rising star wore on the Milton Berle show in 1956 is a look echoed in recent years by nonconformist pop stars Harry Styles and Lorde.

By 1957, Presley’s music career had been established, thanks to hits such as Heartbreak Hotel and Hound Dog. Jailhouse Rock, from the film of the same name, saw Elvis reprise his unapologetically sexual, hip-thrusting performance style, much to the ire of conservatives. Aesthetically, he showcased a popped collar (a future trademark), and double denim, mastering the “Canadian tux” decades before it became a trend.

Success continued for Elvis with the release of Blue Hawaii in 1961. While the next few years would see him retreat from the spotlight while he made a glut of less acclaimed films, this photo shows him at the apex of his success, sporting a look which, albeit with some modernisation, lives on via Justin Bieber’s grubby glam and Gucci’s vivid designs.

For his 1968 comeback show, Elvis opted for top-to-toe leather. While his matte biker jacket lacked the bright embellishment often favoured by designers today, his cocksure swagger (as well as that of other famous leather wearers of the era, among them Marlon Brando) typifies rock nonchalance. It’s a look that today’s chart-botherers, including Alex Turner, continue to channel

This picture was taken at Presley’s 1973 show in Hawaii, just four years before his death at the age of 42. In his final years, the singer was dealing with illness and prescription-drug addiction. Although gaudy and maximalist in the 70s, his style remained influential, with his signature studded jumpsuits undoubtedly inspiring the likes of Michael Jackson, Elton John and David Bowie.
