De son vrai nom RONALD WYCHERLEY ,il est né le 17 avril 1940 à 8:45 au smith down hospital de Liverpool , fils de ALBERT et SARAH JANE .

 

Tres jeune il va tomber malade,atteint de rhumatisme articulaire aigu (maladie de bouillaud) .Il va etre persuade de mourir tres tot !!C est à 11 ans qu'il prend des lecons de piano .A 14 ans il recoit une guitare et en apprend les rudiments (les 3 accords de bases) .Il quitte l'école à l'age de 15 ans, son pere le fait embaucher à ELLISON, apres un an, il se fait virer (violence) .Il va alors comme matelot sur le remorqueur FORMBY, c'est à ce moment qu'il découvre la COUNTRY AND WESTERN et surtout HANK WILLIAMS .Il doit de nouveau changer de bateau (encore une histoire de coup de poing) .Il migre à joshua REYNOLDS ;il va faire quelques apparitions en petit comité, pour se faire la main musicalement parlant .

 

En mai 1958, il enregistre 6 titres au studio PERCY F PHILLIPS, il en fait un acetate et envoie une cassette demo à LARRY PARNES (de star studio BOLD STREET) .Il ne recoit aucune réponse .Il participe alors à une émision de nouveau talent (caroll levis discoveries) et y fait une groose impréssion .C est sa maman qui relance PARNES qui cette fois l'invite à le rencontrer à BIRKENHEAD Essoldo . Il essaie 5 chansons devant LARRY et MARTY WILDE en espérant que MARTY en reprennent une à son compte,mais voila qu'arrive le fameux passage devenu légendaire dans la carriere de BILL, Parne va l'introduire de SUITE DANS LE SPECTACLE, il a alors 18 ans .Il chante MARGO -DON T KNOCK UPON MY DOOR -et MAYBE TOMORROW .Le lendemain il rejoint la tournee et devient professionnel le soir meme à STRETFORD .Parne trouvant son nom peu accrocheur va lui donner un pseudu de futur star BILLY FURY .Son premier enregistrement MAYBE TOMORROW en 1959  va entrer dans le top 20, DECCA RECORDS lui signe alors un contrat de 7 ans .

 

il est n° 9 avec sa propre composition Collette, suivi de That's love. Son premier album est intitulé The Sound of Fury (1960). On y entend le jeune Joe Brown à la guitare, avec un accompagnement vocal des Four Jays. Cet album est considéré comme l'un des albums majeurs du rock britannique.

 

Billy Fury devient populaire avec son groupe The Blue Fames, dans lequel on trouve Georgie Fame aux claviers.

 

Billy Fury délaisse un peu le Rock'n roll pour se concentrer sur les ballades traditionnelles, telles que Halfway to Paradise (1961) et Jealousy (1961). Chacune d'elles atteint le n° 2 dans les hit-parades anglais).

 

En 1962, Billy Fury apparaît dans son premier film Play It Cool, réalisé sur le modèle de ceux d'Elvis Presley. On y voit aussi Helen Shapiro, Danny Rivers, Shane Fenton et Bobby Vee. Le film popularise la chanson Once Upon A Dream.

 

Billy Fury enregistre d'excellents albums. Son We want Billy (1963), avec The Tornados, est l'un des premiers albums de l'histoire du rock britannique avec des interprétations remarquées de plusieurs classiques du rhythm and blues, notamment Unchain my Heart, de Ray Charles.

 

En 1965, il apparaît dans le film I've Gotta Horse, avec le groupe The Bachelors. Billy Fury obtient encore quelques succès comme It's Only my Belive (1964), I Will (1964) et In Thoughts of You (1965). Mais il disparaît des hit-parades autour de 1967. Il connaît des problèmes de santé et subit une opération chirurgicale. Il reste tout de même très populaire.

 

En 1973, il sort de sa retraite pour tourner dans le film That'll Be The Day. Il tient le premier rôle, basé sur la jeunesse de Ringo Starr, le batteur des Beatles. Ringo Starr était de la même région de Liverpool que Billy Fury.

 

En 1981 et 1982, Billy Fury rejoint les disques Polydor et enregistre The One and Only, qui sera publié à titre posthume. Il passe à la télévision dans l'émission Unforgettable, avec six de ses anciens tubes.

 

Sa dernière apparition publique a lieu en décembre 1982 au Sunnyside, à Northampton.

 

Il meurt le 28 janvier 1983 à Londres, dans l'appartement de sa compagne Lisa Rosen.
